“In the woods I met a Dryad Queen. She was sitting in her white oak tree. She said, “Nothing’s really as it seems and everyone should sing their dreams.” ~The Ravens and the Shining Ones.

The songs came after a time of soul loss and descent. They came in answer to my prayer for belonging and love. The part I played in this was finding the courage to pick up a pen, a paint brush, the guitar that I didn’t know how to play and to listen.

I began to hear music and poetry on the borderlands of sleep or anytime I allowed imagination to take me more deeply inside myself. I gathered the bread crumbs of melodies and phrases and just trusted where they were taking me.

Much later I would learn that many ancient traditions understood dreaming, imagination and song as sacred thresholds-places where the visible meets the deeper, unseen realms. In Celtic and other earth-honoring lineages, song was considered to be a gift carried on behalf of the people. The songs came like dreams and lead me through mist-filled passageways into inner worlds filled with everything I loved the most. A tender, loving voice came through, drowning out the cruel ones. Forgotten memory and lost soul parts returned and brought with them my childhood guardians, new allies, and whispered guidance from the stars, the forests, the Sidhe and my own, inner magical child.

John O’Donohue says, “Imagination is the place where we discover what we belong to.”

Through every act of sacred imagination and creation, I had birthed a real place of true belonging. Or these acts had simply given form to what was already alive within me.

And what was coming through every song, and every image, before I even knew I’d lost Her, was the energy, magic and love of the Divine Feminine.

Like many of us, I am shaped by ancestral memory-by land, story and a deep intuitive devotion to Holy Mother.  My upcoming record is a celebration of  Her returning.

If these songs and images find their way to you, may they serve as doorways-into remembering, into tenderness and magic and into the deep, nourishing presence of the Mother who will never stop dreaming and birthing us into being.
